Educational Testing Services
While school transcripts, letters of recommendation and standardized test scores give us a tremendous amount of information about our clients, sometimes more information is needed to understand more fully and clearly a child’s learning profile. In these cases we might recommend that either or both the WISC-IV and the Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Achievement III be administered.
The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children – Fourth Edition (WISC-IV) provides a measure of general intellectual functioning, more commonly known as a Full Scale IQ. This FSIQ score is broken down into four index scores which measure Verbal Comprehension, Perceptual Reasoning, Working Memory, and Processing Speed and the child’s performance on each of these clusters of subtests gives an accurate measure of his or her cognitive abilities. Some day and boarding schools will ask for a WISC-IV as part of their admission requirements.
The Woodcock-Johnson III Tests of Achievement (WJ III ACH) measures a child’s academic achievement and can be used to determine academic strengths and weaknesses. When used in conjunction with behavioral observations, teacher reports, examples of student work and other relevant materials, WJ III ACH results are very helpful in making informed decisions about educational programming.
We administer both these tests at our offices and use this opportunity to learn more about the specific learning style and strengths of our clients. Each test takes about 1 ½ hours to administer. These tests can be scheduled for the same day (with a break between tests) or on separate days, depending on the child and the situation.
If we believe that a fuller battery of tests would be useful, we would be delighted to refer families to several area professionals.
