Independent School Time Line

For Fall Enrollment


Late September

Begin attending Open Houses.  These will be held throughout the fall and into December.

How AHP can help:  After an extensive interview with the parents and the child to gather information about his academic profile, learning style, extracurricular interests, personal qualities, we will generate a list of schools that are the best match for that child.

 

October/November 
Register for either the SSAT or the ISEE.
Start to tour and interview at schools.

The ISEE is offered in November, December and January on several different dates each month.  It is best to register at least one month in advance, allow more time if you want a specific test site.
The SSAT is offered once a month, October through June.  Registration closes 3 weeks before the test date.

How AHP can help:  Most children and adolescents don’t have much experience interviewing and this can be an intimidating experience.  We will discuss interview techniques and strategies with your child and conduct a mock interview, giving your child the practice and feedback that will make this a more comfortable, hopefully even enjoyable, experience.  We will follow up with each school after the interview to hear their perspective on your child.

 

December                                  
Finalize list of schools to which you plan to apply.
Give recommendation forms to teachers.
Give School Report forms to the principal or appropriate person.
Ask coach, Sunday School teacher, or employer for a  recommendation if appropriate.
Begin filling out applications, write rough drafts of essays.

How AHP can help:  Writing an essay for a school application calls for a slightly different style than that used for school papers.  By asking guiding questions and offering some general advice, we work with student’s inherent abilities as writers and thinkers to craft an essay that, in their own voice, presents them in their best light.

Application and essays completed.
Mail in applications.
Set up a day to visit classes (if allowed).
Complete applications for financial aid.

February           
Plan  to spend a day in classes at the schools to which you applied to learn more about the school’s culture and curriculum.

How AHP can help:  Throughout the process we serve as a liaison between the family and the schools.  Count on us to follow up to make sure your application is complete and answer questions the admissions office my have about your child and his candidacy.

           

March                                    
Schools mail decisions.                       

 

April                                                
Decide which school you want to attend and mail in deposit.
